Background

The Health & Safety Partnership (THSP) is a UK-based consultancy delivering health, safety, and HR services across 48+ industries. Their MyTHSP platform — a custom PHP/MySQL SaaS application with 27 integrated modules — supports consultant-led compliance delivery for clients nationwide, covering everything from Fire Risk Assessments and COSHH to Training Needs Analysis and workplace inspections.

When I came on board in a support role, the platform was already in production and serving a growing client base. The brief was to keep it running reliably, identify risk areas, and strengthen the technical foundations without disrupting daily operations.

Work Delivered

Server Analysis & Critical Space Resolution. An audit of the production server revealed it was critically low on disk space - a silent risk that had gone unnoticed. Catching this early prevented a service outage. A plan was put in place to extend storage capacity and introduce regular housekeeping to prevent recurrence.

PHP Memory Optimisation. The PHP memory limit had been set conservatively, well below what the PDF generation system needed to process complex multi-section compliance reports. This was the root cause of intermittent failures affecting consultants in the field. Raising the limit eliminated the failures and allowed the PDF system to handle the most demanding report types without timeouts or incomplete output.

PDF Library Update. The mPDF library powering the platform's 196+ report templates was running an outdated version, missing bug fixes and features required for full compatibility with newer report layouts. Updating it restored access to the full feature set and improved rendering reliability across all assessment types.

Automated Deployment. The deployment process had been manual and error-prone. A repeatable automated workflow was introduced, reducing the risk of human error during releases, enabling faster turnaround on fixes, and creating a consistent process for pushing updates to production.

Error Logging Overhaul. The existing logging was generating excessive noise, obscuring genuine issues and making triage slow. The system was restructured to surface actionable errors clearly, suppress routine non-issues, and present logs in a format that makes diagnosis fast and reliable.

Ongoing Bug Fixes & Feature Development. Beyond the infrastructure work, I provide regular continuing support across the platform — investigating and resolving bugs reported by consultants and clients, and delivering incremental feature improvements as the business evolves. Having a consistent technical partner familiar with the codebase means issues are resolved quickly, without the overhead of onboarding a new developer each time.

Outcomes

The work delivered meaningful improvements to platform stability, operational reliability, and developer efficiency. Critical infrastructure risks were identified and resolved before they caused downtime. PDF generation failures — previously a recurring frustration for consultants — were eliminated entirely. Deployment became a controlled, repeatable process, and the error logging system now makes issues fast to find and fix.
